FM Kavin Mohan gets his 3rd and final IM Norm

FM Kavin Mohan gets his 3rd and final IM Norm

1st IM Norm: Earned at the inaugural 1st Chess Hub – MCF GM-IM Invitational Chess Championship in Kuala Lumpur (July–August 2025), where he also secured his FIDE Master (FM) title and the “Best Malaysian” award.

2nd IM Norm: Secured just a month later when he won the prestigious 20th Dato’ Arthur Tan Malaysian Open unconditionally with an unbeaten 7/9 score (September 2025).

Kavin just got his final 3rd IM Norm: Achieved at the 3rd Quang Ninh IM Chess Tournament in Vietnam (July 2026). Entering the final rounds of the round-robin event, he comfortably cleared the required point threshold against titled opposition to lock in his final norm.

Venue Details

  • Location: Quang Ninh Exhibition of Urban Planning & Expo (a notable landmark often referred to locally as the “Dolphin Palace” due to its unique architecture).
  • Address: Ha Long Ward, Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam.
Ha Long, Vietnam

Tournament Data

  • Event Category: He competed specifically in the IM 1 group.
  • Dates: July 2, 2026 – July 7, 2026.
  • Format: A 10-player, 9-round individual round-robin system.
  • Time Control: Standard classical time control consisting of 90 minutes for the game, plus a 30-second increment per move starting from move 1.

  • If I am not mistaken, the late Petr Long played a part in the first editions of these IM and GM tournaments in Vietnam.

With all three norms completed, Kavin Mohan simply needs to push his live FIDE rating past the 2400 threshold. He is currently officially EL 2250 and with the current performance will received another 60+ ELO points. That leaves about 90 more ELO to officially have the International Master title conferred by FIDE.
