Shin Azwan, also known as Norazwaan Kamaruzaman, is a dedicated and indispensable member of the Malaysian chess community.1 Although he is known as the “DGT guy” for setting up and managing the digital boards that broadcast games live at the 2024 Malaysian Chess Festival, Azwan wears many hats.
He also served as the Fair Play officer for the tournament, ensuring proper anti-cheating protocols were followed. In addition, Azwan is a qualified arbiter who previously worked at the Chennai Olympiad.
Azwan shares his love of chess through his YouTube channel, where he teaches viewers about various rules of the game.
His dedication to chess often leads to a hectic schedule, requiring him to travel for different events. When traveling for a recent event in Sarawak, Azwan had to think fast after accidentally leaving his identification in his car at the airport!3 While he was unable to catch his flight, the DGT boards made it to Sarawak without issue.3 Even from afar, Azwan was able to successfully direct his assistants in Sarawak to transport and set up the boards remotely.
When asked about his busy, and sometimes chaotic, work life, Azwan simply says, “It’s all for the love of chess.”
