Through five rounds, China’s unrated wonder Yang Jiayou had been an unstoppable freight train, dispatching five consecutive rated opponents. On Friday afternoon, Malaysian veteran See Hooi Chin (1737) took up the white pieces on Board 1 against an opponent who has won all of his 5 previous games!

See Hooi Chin became the first player in the entire festival to take points off Yang Jiayou, moving to 5.0/6 while keeping Yang at 5.5/6.

Mongolia’s WCM Uranzaya Shagdarsuren Topples #1 Seed

While Board 1 ended in a draw, Board 2 produced an outright earthquake. Mongolia’s WCM Shagdarsuren Uranzaya (1837) outplayed the tournament’s top seed, Recarte Tiauson (PHI, 1925), with the black pieces in a sparkling attacking display.
