Ding is back with a world title !!

The 2026 FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Team Championships just wrapped up in Hong Kong – and it was ABSOLUTE CHAOS (in the best way possible)!

This was the FIRST time this event has ever been held in East Asia, and nearly 50 teams of six battled it out over 5 days of high-stakes chess.

THE FORMAT

• 12-round Swiss (Rapid)

• 15 minutes + 10-second increment per move

• Each team must field:

At least 1 Woman

At least 1 “Recreational Player” (rated <2000)

DRAGON CHILLING – THE EARLY DOMINANCE

Led by Ding Liren, reigning women’s world champion Ju Wenjun, and world #2 Lei Tingjie, Dragon Chilling shot to the top after a PERFECT Day 1, tying for the lead with Richard Rapport’s Kazchess.

By Day 2, they were SOLE LEADERS – the only undefeated team through 8 rounds!

(Though Ding hit a rough patch – losing a 177-move MARATHON to Rapport, then drawing SIX games in a row… )

THE FINAL-DAY ROLLERCOASTER

Dragon Chilling started the last day with a 1-point cushion and a 5–1 beatdown over Barys, opening a 3-point gap…

…then promptly LOST their next TWO matches.

Suddenly, Mr Birdie and Friends (led by Vladislav Artemiev) held the sole lead heading into the FINAL ROUND.

DING DELIVERS WHEN IT MATTERS

On Board 1, with everything on the line – Ding snapped his 6-game draw streak in STYLE, beating Zhao Jun in just 20 moves after a critical error on move 17.

That win set the tone for a crushing 5–1 match victory.

Captain Ni Hua summed it up perfectly:

“It reminded me of Arsenal vs Manchester City. We lost in the previous match, but this round we won. You can see that Ding started very slow and then he became better and better. In the last round we asked him to push, and he made it.”

A THREE-WAY PHOTO FINISH!

The drama didn’t end with Ding’s win – it all came down to OTHER matches:

• Hexamind beat Mr Birdie & Friends 3.5–2.5 → pulled level

• Team MGD1 won 5–1 over Barys → also pulled level

3 teams. 18 match points. IDENTICAL.

It went to TIEBREAKS – weighing both margin of victory AND opponent strength.

The final numbers:

Dragon Chilling – 647.5 (GOLD on tiebreak!)

Team MGD1 – 632 (Silver – defending champs from 2025)

Hexamind – 611.5 (Bronze – incredible recovery after a shaky start)

THE HEARTBREAK & THE SHOCK

• Mr Birdie and Friends – who LED going into the last round and prepped with blitz & team bonding instead of heavy coaching – missed the podium entirely by the slimmest of margins.

• WR Chess – the pre-tournament FAVORITES with Magnus Carlsen & Fabiano Caruana – finished a miserable 17th… with Carlsen suffering 4 consecutive over-the-board losses for the first time since he was 12 years old.

WHAT’S NEXT?

The action has already shifted to the World Team Blitz Championship (June 20–21) in the same Hong Kong venue!

Riding this wave of momentum, “Dragon Chilling” dominated the subsequent Blitz Championship. Ding Liren found his peak form, commanding the top board with speed and precision.

The team tore through the bracket, culminating in a crushing 5–1 victory over “Endgame.AI” in the final match.This historic double victory re-established Ding Liren’s dominance on the international stage, proving his elite resilience alongside China’s finest chess talents.
